These hills have an ancient history. On 18 December 218 BC, not far from here, Roman legions led by consul Tiberius Sempronius Longus faced the forces of Hannibal at the Battle of the Trebia — and were routed. Of all the war elephants Hannibal had brought across the Alps, only one survived the cold and the fighting. That elephant is the symbol on Il Poggio's labels: an image that speaks of the land before it speaks of the wine.

Il Poggio is part of a network of friendships connecting winemakers, restaurateurs, farmers and artisans across the Piacenza hills — people bound together by a shared work ethic and a deep love for this land. It is this network that keeps the Piacenza hills alive, and increasingly recognised across Italy and abroad by those who love wine and good food.
